According to Time:
Azerbaijan, a Basic Overview in Light of the Nation's Hosting of COP-29
ACCORDING TO TIME
Illham Aliyev won the presidency in Azerbaijan from the results of a snap election in September, bringing his increasingly consolidated rule of the country to over twenty years in power, after his father was in power for more than ten. Azerbaijan is a presidential oligarchy, based on hereditary lines.
The reason Azerbaijan is considered an oligarchy while still holding elections is because the ruling party stamps out dissent and challenges to their rule, by jailing dissenters and members of opposition parties, as well as controlling the media, working actively against freedom of the press.
Reflecting as a citizen of the U.S., I am grateful that all have freedom of opportunity (the right to pursue happiness), and also that our executive and legislative administrations have a great history of peaceful transfers of power amongst elections and who we vote into office.
